NOELLE FEODORA MOK

Demystification of the Orient

"If more of us valued food and cheer and song above hoarded  gold, it would be a merrier world."

-J.R.R. Tolkien

My paintings depict a feast in the setting of a plain stonewall typically found in Dutch still life paintings. The setting is replaced with a common Hong Kong kitchen wall. The Western elements are maintained by keeping the starkly lit lighting style of Dutch still life paintings and singular perspective.

I establish reference to digital work within my paintings by collaging images of Hong Kong food taken from digital photos and social media sites into one horizontal row on a horizontal canvas. Painting the images next to each other without adjusting the lighting, shadows, or angle of the food preserves the digital quality of the food photos.

A dialogue is now created to explore themes such as the demystification of the Orient, globalism, the digital age, and authenticity of Asian food.
